FLAMES Calculator

The notebook game, done properly. Type two names and the calculator crosses out the shared letters, counts what is left and strikes its way around F-L-A-M-E-S, showing every step so you can check it by hand. You get a love percentage with it, for free.

Type two names to get your result. The calculator needs JavaScript, which loads with the page.

What is the FLAMES game?

FLAMES is a name game that has been passed between desks in Indian schools and colleges for decades. It takes two names and ends on one of six words: Friends, Lovers, Affection, Marriage, Enemies or Siblings. The full form is the same everywhere, though some people play the S as Soulmates. It needs nothing but a pen, which is why it survived.

How to play FLAMES on paper

Write both names. Cross out each letter that appears in both, one pair at a time, so a double letter in one name only cancels a double in the other. Count the letters that are left. Now write F L A M E S and count along them, starting from F, striking out the letter you land on. Keep counting from the next letter, with the same number, skipping anything already struck, until one letter remains. That letter is the result.

A worked example

Take Anna and Nina. They share N, N and A, which leaves A from Anna and I from Nina: two letters. Count two around FLAMES and strike L. Count two from A and strike M. Count two from E and strike S. Count two from F and strike A. Count two from E and strike F. E remains: Enemies. Type the names in above and the calculator shows the same five strikes.

Is FLAMES real or fake?

It is a game, and an old one. The result depends only on which letters the two names share, so it says nothing about either person. That is also what makes it fair: everyone gets the same answer for the same names, and nobody can rig it. Enjoy it, screenshot it, and if you land on Lovers, maybe mention it to them.

FLAMES calculator or love percentage?

Both come from the names, but they answer different questions. FLAMES gives you a word, following the exact paper rules. The love percentage gives you a number, from a fixed formula on the letters. We show both because people argue about which one is right, and the honest answer is neither. Pick the one that gives the better result and share that.
